Plug and pneumatic connection lockout equipment are LOTO devices that prevent plug-connected electrical devices and pneumatic tools connected to an air line from being re-energized during maintenance. The plug or quick-connect end is enclosed in a lockable housing; when the housing is closed with a safety padlock, the plug cannot be inserted into the socket and the hose cannot be connected to the air line.
A significant share of the equipment most often taken for maintenance in workshops and production lines is plug-in machines and pneumatic tools. Pulling the plug may seem practical, but another worker who is unaware of the situation may plug it back in. A plug lockout physically eliminates that possibility; on pneumatic lines, residual pressure must be released before locking out.
At Sofilx, we offer lockout equipment for small electrical plugs, industrial plugs, combination electrical and pneumatic connections, gas cylinders and air sources, as well as a plug lockout bag.
Types of Plug and Pneumatic Lockout
Electrical plug lockouts
Compact enclosures that cover single-phase and small plugs to prevent them from being inserted into a socket; an ABS plastic body option is also available.
Industrial pin-and-sleeve plug lockouts
Protective lockouts designed for large industrial plugs and duct connections.
Combination electrical + pneumatic
A multi-purpose lockout device that fits both electrical plugs and pneumatic quick-connect ends.
Pneumatic connection and air supply lockouts
Locks out quick-disconnect points and gas or air sources to prevent the line from being reconnected.
Gas cylinder lockouts
Adjustable lockout devices with plastic bodies that block access to cylinder and tank valves.
Model selection table
The type and size of the connection to be locked out is the first criterion in deciding which equipment to use.
| Series / Model | Connection type | Example equipment | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|---|
| BD-D41 – Small plug lockout | Small electrical plug | Hand tools, small machines | Quick lockout of compact plugs |
| BD-E81 – ABS plug lockout | Electrical plug | Bench machines | General-purpose use with plastic body |
| BD-D45 – Industrial plug lockout | Industrial / duct plug | Production machines | Large industrial plugs |
| BD-D31 – Combination lockout | Electrical + pneumatic | Pneumatic tools | Plugs and quick-connect ends |
| BD-Q01 – Quick-disconnect lockout | Pneumatic quick connector | Air hoses | Pneumatic line connection points |
| BD-Q31 or BD-Q21 – Cylinder lockout | Gas cylinder / tank | Gas cylinders | Blocking access to the cylinder valve |
| BD-D71 – Plug lockout bag | Very large or multiple plugs | Welding machines, cable reels | Flexible, collective lockout |
- Plug size: Measure the widest part of the plug; the plug should fit into the housing without being forced.
- Connection type: Clarify whether the equipment will be used for electrical only, pneumatic only, or both.
- Pressure release: On pneumatic and gas lines, always bleed off residual pressure in the line before locking out.
- Padlock and tag: Close the housing with a safety padlock and hang a warning tag on it showing who locked it out and why.
- Multiple users: If more than one person will work, add a lockout hasp to the enclosure so everyone can attach their own lock.
- Line isolation: If you need to isolate the entire compressed air line, use the air supply lockout together with valve lockouts.
