A safety padlock is a personal safety lock belonging to a single worker, used in lockout–tagout (LOTO) procedures to keep an energy source shut off for the duration of maintenance. In the field it is also known as a LOTO lock or LOTO padlock. The worker fits their padlock onto a circuit breaker lockout device, valve lockout or lockout hasp; as long as the key stays in their pocket, no one else can re-energize that point.
They should not be confused with ordinary padlocks sold for property protection. LOTO locks have a lightweight, impact-resistant body, are suitable for colour coding and carry a warning marking. The most important difference is the key-retaining feature: the key cannot be removed from the cylinder until the lock is closed, reducing the risk of a lock left open or a lost key.
At Sofilx LOTO, we offer these locks in 38 mm and 76 mm shackle heights, in red, yellow, blue, green, black, white, orange and purple. You can create a colour and key scheme by person, team or department.
Types of Safety Padlocks
38 mm steel shackle padlocks
The most commonly preferred type for panel, circuit breaker and valve lockout; its short, compact shackle fits easily into lockout hasp holes.
38 mm plastic shackle padlocks
Its non-conductive shackle stands out at points with electrical risk; its light weight makes it easy to carry in personal LOTO bags.
76 mm long shackle padlocks
For thick valve handles, wide hasp holes or situations where several parts must be locked at once, models with steel and nylon bodies and long hangers are used.
Dust-protected padlocks
DP models with cylinder-opening protection help keep the lock mechanism clean in dusty and dirty environments.
Color and key systems
Use colours to separate teams, shifts or subcontractors; with keyed-different, keyed-alike and master key options, build a structure that fits your LOTO program.
Padlocks with tag and personalization
By adding a name, employee number, department or photo label to the body, it is clear at first glance who the lock belongs to; for custom print requests, you can contact us.
Model selection table
First determine the shackle length and shackle material according to the point of use, then distribute the colors according to your team or department plan.
| Series / Model | Hanger length | Body / hanger | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|---|
| BD-G01 – G08 – Steel shackle | 38 mm | Steel shackle, 8 colors | General-purpose use for circuit breaker, valve and lockout hasp lockout |
| BD-G11 – G18 – Plastic shackle | 38 mm | Non-conductive shackle, 8 colors | Electrical panels and personal LOTO sets |
| BD-G01DP / BD-G11DP – Dust-proof | 38 mm | Steel or plastic shackle | Dusty, dirty production environments |
| BD-G21 – G28 – Steel shackle | 76 mm | Steel shackle, 8 colors | Thick handles, wide hasp holes, large lockout devices |
| BD-G31 – G38 – Nylon body | 76 mm | Nylon body, 8 colours | Electrical and harsh-environment applications requiring a long shackle |
| BD-G29 – Plastic shackle | 76 mm | Plastic hanger, brown | Separate color group requiring a long, non-conductive shackle |
- Shackle length: Measure the hole diameter and wall thickness of the device to be locked out; 38 mm is sufficient for most applications, and 76 mm is preferred for thick parts.
- Hasp material: At points with electrical hazards, use non-conductive options such as plastic or nylon.
- Environmental conditions: In areas with heavy dust and dirt, consider DP models that protect the cylinder.
- Color plan: Decide in advance which color belongs to which team, shift or subcontractor, and write it into the written LOTO procedure.
- Key arrangement: Choose keyed-different for personal padlocks and keyed-alike for team padlocks; use the master key only in a controlled and recorded manner.
- Quantity and storage: Allocate at least one padlock to each authorized worker, plan extra padlocks for workers at multiple points, and store padlocks neatly in LOTO stations.
Where Are Safety Padlocks Used?
Electrical panels
Circuit breakers are secured in the off position with breaker lockout devices.
Valves and pipelines
Ball, butterfly and gate valve lockouts are closed with a safety padlock to cut off flow.
Multi-person maintenance
With lockout hasps and group lock boxes, each team member adds their own lock to the same point.
Production lines

Safety Padlock Prices and Models
We have gathered the safety padlock models used in LOTO applications into a single catalog. Among steel-shackle, plastic-shackle, nylon-body and dust-protected options, you can easily find the padlock that fits your shackle length, material and color needs.
For companies setting up a lockout program, the color plan and key system are at least as important as the lock model. With keyed-different, keyed-alike and master-key alternatives, you can build a controlled LOTO structure at personal, team and supervisor level; you can personalize the locks with a name or department label.
Safety padlock prices vary by model, shackle length, key system and quantity, so instead of a fixed list we prepare a quote tailored to your needs. Just send us the product codes and quantities via WhatsApp or phone.
