Valves that control the flow of water, steam, gas, compressed air or chemicals in pipelines must stay closed throughout maintenance and repair. Valve lockout equipment is a LOTO device that wraps around the handle or handwheel of a valve set to the closed position, making it physically impossible to turn by hand. Once the device is fitted, a personal safety padlock and a warning tag are added on top.

Fluid lines are as dangerous as electrical sources: a single valve opened by mistake on a hot or pressurized line can result in burns, poisoning or an explosion. That is why valve isolation is an indispensable step in every lockout-tagout program.

Because valve types and sizes vary from site to site, Sofilx LOTO supplies ball valve lockouts, butterfly valve lockouts, gate valve lockouts, plug valve and blind flange lockouts, together with universal models that fit different valves, all under one roof.

Product guide

Types of Valve Lockout Equipment

Ball valve lockouts

Holds the handle in the closed position on quarter-turn handle valves; adjustable, large-size, flanged and metal-body options are available.

Butterfly valve lockouts

Grips the trigger handle and the handle body together to prevent the butterfly valve from being opened; models with pull handles and large adjustable models are available.

Gate valve lockouts

Polypropylene covers that completely enclose the handwheel; offered in different sizes for handwheel diameters from 64 mm to 600 mm.

Universal valve lockouts

The blocking arm and 1.8 m cable combination lets a single device fit valves of different types and sizes.

Blind flange and plug valve lockouts

In isolations where the line is separated at the flange, it prevents removal of the blind flange, and on plug valves it prevents stem movement.

Permanent-mount and lockout bag

Perma-mount models permanently fitted to frequently locked valves, and a bag for carrying ball valve lockouts regularly.

  • Determine the valve type: First clarify whether you will lock a lever-operated ball or butterfly valve, or a handwheel gate valve.
  • Take measurements: Measure the handle length, pipe diameter or handwheel diameter; adjustable models cover several sizes in a single body.
  • Assess the environment: If there is high temperature, chemical contact or outdoor use, choose metal-body or durable polypropylene models.
  • Consider the number of valves: For many valves side by side, universal models with cable or cable lockouts make the job easier.
  • Consider team size: If several people will work on the same valve, add a lockout hasp to the padlock.
  • Consider a ready-made kit: At sites with a mix of valve types, meet all your needs at once with a lockout bag or kit.
Applications

Where Is Valve Lockout Equipment Used?

Oil, gas and petrochemicals

Prevents uncontrolled flow by isolating valves and blind flanges in refineries and pipelines.

Water and wastewater facilities

Prevents valves from being opened unintentionally in pump stations, treatment plants and network maintenance.

Power plants and boiler rooms

Provides safe shut-off against burn risk on steam and hot water lines.

Food, pharmaceutical and production facilities

Holds valves on process lines in place during maintenance, protecting both occupational safety and hygiene.

How do I know which valve lockout to buy?
First look at the valve type (ball, butterfly, gate, plug) and size. Handle lockouts for lever valves, covers that enclose the handwheel for handwheel valves, and universal models for sites with a mix of types are the right choice.
Can a ball valve lockout be fitted to a butterfly valve?
Usually no; a ball valve lockout is designed to secure a quarter-turn handle, while a butterfly valve lockout secures a lever handle with a trigger. Where a lockout must fit both types, universal valve lockouts can be used.
How do I choose the size of a gate valve lockout?
Measure the handwheel diameter and choose the model that covers that size; for example, BD-F12 is for 64–127 mm, BD-F14 for 165–254 mm, and BD-F15B for 450–600 mm handwheels.
Can I lock out several valves side by side with a single device?
Yes. With universal cable models or cable lockout equipment, valves close to each other can be connected on a single cable and locked out together.
Is a valve lockout enough on its own?
No, a valve lockout is only an isolation device; each worker must fit their own safety padlock and LOTO warning tag onto it.
Which model is suitable for chemical or hot environments?
In harsh conditions like these, we recommend choosing durable models such as metal-bodied ball valve lockouts.
How are valve lockout equipment prices determined?
The price varies by model, material, size and order quantity. For a current quote and stock information, you can send the product code and quantity to our WhatsApp or phone line.

Valve Lockout Equipment Prices and Models

Valve lockout equipment is the basic tool for safely isolating pipelines in LOTO procedures. By securing the handle or handwheel of a valve in the closed position, these devices prevent flow from restarting and unexpected energy release while the maintenance team works.

Sofilx LOTO offers ball valve lockouts, butterfly valve lockouts, gate valve lockouts, plug valve and blind flange lockout models, along with adjustable, metal-body and cable universal options. Models resistant to corrosion, chemicals and harsh field conditions are widely used in chemical, petroleum, energy, water and food facilities.
